The bustling seaside town of Ulverstone at the mouth of the Leven River is a laid-back getaway with abundant birdlife, family-friendly swimming beaches, coastal paths and scenic picnic spots. Panoramic views of the town can be seen from the quirky zigzag gardens in Maud Street, and river cruises head 7 km upstream for lunch on the riverbank. There's good fishing to be had in the river and estuary, too. Ulverstone has an agricultural tradition that continues today. At the Ulverstone History Museum you can step back in time and wander through a display of artefacts, manuscripts, tools and photographs depicting the life of the district's early pioneers.
